I suspect the afterlife was part of the original sales package as an incentive to followers to cope with a shit life and get their reward for obeying the rules.

bet it keeps some sects of christians actually coping with life. methodists who seem to refrain from things not even mentioned in the bible come to mind. not a gambler, drinker and past it for nookie but whats evil about doing anything in short measures or finding out you are compatable in bed before you tie the knot.

The dogma is their life…..I always get amused by those who suddenly ‘find god’ in middle age….. scared of dying? No one gets out alive.

always wonder what that actually means. sounds likes if they were searching in a cupboard and found something they thought they had lost. a strange expression like many that includes fighting an illness especially a cancer. more or less you are just lying there with people doing their best to keep you alive as you cannot change things on your own. its more likely they have been speaking to someone or hearing something that just resonates with them. its like whatever politics or the party you support. you do not find it you eventually work it out for what suits you. i found the vic but knew it was there before i did.
