I saw the memorial that they have recently unveiled in North Shields to this young man. Got to say it brought a lump to my throat.

Maybe he saved millions of lives.

Nice to see a real hero being rewarded with recognition.
Can I also point out the he followed Lieutenant Francis Fasson and Able Seaman Colin Grazier over to the sinking U boat from HMS Petard and they went inside to recover the code books which were passed up and when it sank they went down with the U boat and Brown was blown clear of the vessel with the books.

If you get a chance, visit Bletchley Park.

Amazing story.

In WW1 the British captured a code book that helped alert them to the possible attack up the North East coast on 16th December 1914. The battery at Hartlepool was then manned that day and helped repulse the attack although after much loss of life.

I’ll have to check that one out because I think it involved a Russian warship who discovered it in the Baltic on the wreck of a German vessel and passed it on to our Goverment.

It was discovered by the Russians early into the war and passed on to Room 40, which was the name of British Naval Intelligence in WW1.
