You cannot go on surveys too much but there has been a recent one where a good percentage want that to happen even down to the age of 50. Being well over that age i,d agree to that if they refuse to take some type of driving test and medical. There are 70 year olds and 70 year olds like in all age groups but a bigger difference at that age i feel. It might sound a bit i,m all right jack after doing more miles in reverse in my lifetime than some do off their regular routes.

they would not lose a penny as the cost would be paid by the driver who wanted their licence to continue. might actually that the driver could save money on insurance costs by proving they are competant drivers therefore no reason to increase premiums for age alone.

Part of the plan to cut the number of vehicles on the road…in dribs and drabs…..the loons who have the power want to see the end of private vehicles…especially the petrol/diesel ones.
I feel we are going backwards to a time where you don’t travel very far from your hometown a bit like the Victorians….. the difference is they were pushing forward, while we are being pushed back.

Crash rate per driver is highest from 25 to 34. Targeting older drivers is totally barking up the wrong tree.

I think the problem is when someone is elderly and using the car regularly it is a difficult conversation about driving standards. We, as a family, had to have the conversation with my mam after a few "near misses" while I was in the car with her.

An official re-test at some point takes that pressure away from families and also covers those without families to have that conversation. Self-certification that you are still ok to drive does seem a bit of a cop-out by the DVLA.

My mam was fortunate that she lived on a good bus route so never really missed the car after she sold it. We also pointed out the money she was saving on insurance and servicing would pay for a lot of taxi rides but, being of a certain age, she didn't want to spend money when those nice Council people gave her a bus pass

and are less likely to buy cars with loads of gangets fitted, watching a screen in front of them or going for more than 5 minutes without looking at a mobile phone.

it has been for years. had a merc 4.3 estate once with 6 pages of info on how to use the radio. only used it for weekend football use and by the next game i had to look at the manual again to find out how to work it just to find a channel to get the results.
